Puzzles - Windy leaves
On a grey day when I was five, Mum decided to bring me to the little
park between the cultural center and the giant crossroads. I so loved that
peaceful bubble, lost in the middle of so much movement and activity: I
remember we could see the dancers during their rehearsals when we were standing
on top of the “yellow” tree, and gave some crumbs to the birds near the slide.
There were three trees: I still don’t know why, but in autumn, their leaves
were coloured differently according to the tree. One was yellow, the second was red,
and the last one was leafless as from the end of summer, and was called the
black tree.
So that day, I was determined to climb up the red tree in order to see
what I could observe from there. Upon reaching the top, I sat down on a branch
and examined the leaves… And what I saw amazed me: some leaves were being torn
from the tree and carried away from the park. I went down quickly and ran to my
mother, shouting, nearly crying: “Mummy!!
Why are the leaves flying away?
- Because the sap doesn’t flow in
them anymore. Nothing keeps them here, and nothing could, she answered calmly. They are dead so the wind takes them in his cold claws.
- But why is he doing it?
picking up two leaves, one red, one yellow, I asked again: How can we stop him?
- Nobody has to stop him, it’s Nature. ”
I wasn’t satisfied so I undertook to pick up all the leaves in the park,
and to give the red ones back to the red tree, and the yellow ones to the
yellow tree…
Then, seasons after seasons, the wind continued to take the dead
leaves, continued to caress the bark of every tree, continued to blow in my
hair... And it became natural to me, to see the flying funeral procession of
the leaves in the air...
